‘Sweetbitter’ Renewed for Season 2 at Starz

Jul 13, 2018       Category: News ,Sweetbitter       Comments: 0

Based on the novel by Stephanie Danler, the half-hour dramedy stars Ella Purnell.

Starz is ordering a second helping of Sweetbitter.

The premium cable network has renewed the half-hour dramedy for a second season. The series, based on the book of the same name by Stephanie Danler, wrapped its run in June with an average of 164,000 live-same-day viewers and mixed reviews among critics. (The series has a 35 percent rating among critics and 88 percent score among viewers on RottenTomatoes.com.) Season two will consist of 10 episodes — up from six in its freshman run. A return date has not yet been determined.

“Season one gave audiences a taste of the characters and backstory of an upscale New York restaurant, leaving them wanting more — which we will deliver with a second helping of Sweetbitter,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said. “The immersion of the audience into the world in and around the restaurant will deepen as the series looks further into the complexities of Tess’ awakening and the lives of her new friends and colleagues in the second season.”

Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge and Caitlin FitzGerald star in Sweetbitter, with Stuart Zicharman (The Americans) serving as showrunner. Brad Pitt’s Plan B exec produces the series, which landed at Starz following a multiple-network bidding war.

Sweetbitter joins a scripted roster at Starz that also includes Outlander, Power, Counterpart, Vida and American Gods.

Ella Purnell becomes YoungMinds Ambassador after opening up about her own struggles

Jul 6, 2018       Category: News       Comments: 0

21-year-old actress Ella Purnell has become the newest ambassador for YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.

The announcement comes after Ella opened up about her own mental health struggles with anxiety and depression in an interview with the Evening Standard earlier this year.

Ella said: “I have always felt passionate about talking openly and removing the stigma around mental health, after my own struggles as a teenager with anxiety, depression and self-harm left me feeling alone and unable to ask for help. Looking back, despite the fact almost half the class were struggling with different issues, we had no idea who or where to turn to.

I have been following the work of YoungMinds for a few years and have always admired their passion and dedication. Not only do they start conversations and raise awareness about mental health, they campaign for better inpatient care, more thorough education and resources in schools and more accessible mental health services. YoungMinds has a direct and effective impact, helping so many people and I am honoured and inspired to be joining them on this journey.”

The actress has most recently been the star of US drama Sweetbitter, available in the UK on STARZPLAY on Amazon Prime Video Channels, as well as Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence, broadcast on BBC One at Easter. Ella has also appeared in films such as Never Let Me Go, Churchill, Kick Ass 2, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Malificent.

Ella Purnell first started struggling with her mental health in school and plans to support the charity’s Wise Up campaign, which aims to rebalance the education system to ensure that there is a greater focus on children’s wellbeing.

Tom Madders, Director of Campaigns at YoungMinds said:

“We’re delighted that Ella is becoming our ambassador and joining the fight for children and young people’s mental health. Our research has found that while young people are better than ever at talking about mental health, only 9% of those who reach out for help find it easy to the support they need. That’s simply not good enough.

“We need to make sure that our services are equipped to give help to young people who need it, and that our school system values students’ wellbeing at least as much as it does exam results. YoungMinds has big plans to improve the support young people get for their mental health, and we’re excited that Ella will be helping us make them happen.”

Ordeal by Innocence – Interview with Ella Purnell

Mar 22, 2018       Category: News ,Ordeal by Innocence       Comments: 0

Who is Hester and how does she fit into the story?

Hester is the youngest of the adopted children, she was adopted third. She is 18 in present day though we first meet her in flashback in 1953 when she was 15 or thereabouts. She is the baby of the family and she’s treated that way even though that’s not necessarily how she feels. Hester has the perfect Miss 50s look with the wide skirts and an equally wide-eyed innocence but she has two personas. She has the family persona where she plays the princess and she has her real character, which is how she behaves with her siblings where she acts much older.

What is her relationship like with her siblings?

She is closest to Jack and Tina, and she is closest in age to Jack, he has this mischievous spirit and independence that she craves. She is also very close to Tina. Tina is very protective and sweet and offers the advice and provides the mothering that Rachel can’t quite offer Hester. Later in the story she becomes closer to Mickey, he is possibly her favourite of all the brothers and sisters. Mary is much older than any of them and is married so she’s slightly set apart from the others. She doesn’t quite let go the way the other siblings do.

What is her relationship like with Rachel?

Hester and Rachel’s relationship is difficult. It isn’t your normal mother/daughter relationship. The tragedy with Rachel is that she always desperately wanted her own children and she can’t have them so she adopts thinking it will make her happy but it doesn’t. She never offers them any affection, any kind words or encouragement, nothing. I think a lot of their relationship is based on what Hester looks like and Rachel is always selecting her clothes and making sure Hester always looks perfect which is why Hester develops an obsession with her appearance, maintaining this expectation even after Rachel is murdered. Rachel is almost like a pushy stage mum, putting pressure on Hester to always get her piano recitals perfect through hours and hours of practice. I do however think she loves her mother, they all do in some way, but it’s a weird kind of love when you love someone who doesn’t give you anything back.

How does she interact with her adopted father and what is the essence of their relationship?

Leo loves all his children and they adore him. Hester especially will always love her father and always want his approval but in the end there will be that distance between them. It breaks her heart knowing that he can’t look at her the way he used to.

What is the dynamic between Hester and Philip, her brother in law?

Hester and Philip have a weird relationship and it took me a while to figure it out. What I was struggling with was that Hester has an ‘on-face’ and an ‘off-face’ and she puts the “on-face” with her mother and father and with Philip as well to a degree. But Philip is so perceptive, he knows she puts on an act. It’s something they don’t speak about but it’s obvious he has the measure of her. Does she know about his attraction to her? Is he really attracted to her? I don’t know. He probably does but equally it may be to spite Mary. There are so many twisted feelings amongst them all that right and wrong become confused in some regards.

Were you aware of Christie’s work beforehand or familiar with this story?

I knew who Agatha Christie was of course but I haven’t read many of her books previously and I hadn’t heard of Ordeal By Innocence. When I found out I had got the part I did read the book, it is still modern and relevant to today in its core themes but the way Sarah (Phelps) has structured the flashbacks and story hooks in the script kept me gripped from the beginning. Each character is incredibly complex.

You had to learn the piano for the part?

I had to learn Chopin’s Nocturne No 4 or 5, I used to play piano when I was a kid but hadn’t played for ages, so sitting at a piano wasn’t completely alien to me but you do forget just how hard it is to play! It took me three months to learn five bars. It was really tough but really nice to do and I’ve slowly got back into my piano. And for Hester it is another expression of her and who she is. She was taught to play with a book on her head and play these classical pieces. I imagine in her spare time she dreams of going to Greenwich and playing jazz, wearing trousers and drinking wine and just being herself which she never gets to explore.

You are well known within the fashion world, how have you enjoyed exploring this era through the costumes?

The 1950s is my favourite era. I’ve done the 40s before but I was so pleased when I learnt it was set in the 50s. It is like playing my favourite kind of dress-up. I never wear pretty, dainty, girly dresses and it helps so much with the physicality of the character which I discussed at length with Sandra before we started; the fact that she is almost balletic and graceful in her demeanour. Audrey Hepburn was a huge inspiration for me and the way that you move in the dresses and heels helps enormously.

Ella Purnell to Star in Starz’s ‘Sweetbitter’ Adaptation

Oct 7, 2017       Category: News ,Sweetbitter       Comments: 0

Starz has found the star of its upcoming drama series Sweetbitter.

Ella Purnell will play the lead role in the television adaptation of Stephanie Danler’s national best-selling novel. In addition, Emmy winning writer-director Richard Shepard has joined the six-episode series from Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment as an executive producer. Shepard, who directed a dozen episodes of Girls, will helm the series premiere.

The hot project landed at Starz in July after a multiple-network bidding war. Sweetbitter, described as Kitchen Confidential meets Bridget Jones, is a young woman’s coming-of-age story that takes place in the world of exclusive restaurants. It centers on 22-year-old Tess (Purnell), who shortly after arriving in New York City lands a job at a celebrated restaurant downtown. She’s quickly introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars and fine dining, and learns to navigate the chaotically alluring yet punishing life she’s stumbled into.

Danler wrote the script for the drama with Stu Zicherman (The Americans, The Affair) attached to develop the script with her. The pair will serve as executive producers alongside Shepard. Donna Bloom will serve as producer, with Laura Rosenthal leading the casting search.

“Ella’s portfolio of work and the array of her characters and performances in her young career are truly remarkable. We are excited for fans of the book and audiences to meet Tess,” said Starz president of programming Carmi Zlotnik. “We are also excited by Richard’s vision to bring the book’s richly written sensory experiences from the page to the screen.”

Purnell is best known for her role in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The 21 year-old British actress also appeared in Never Let Me Go, Kick-Ass 2 and Maleficent. Shepard directed the pilots for Criminal Minds, Ugly Betty and Rosewood, in addition to his extensive work on Girls. His feature credits include The Matador, starring Pierce Brosnan, and Dom Hemingway, starring Jude Law.

Purnell is repped by WME and Sloane Offer. Shepard is repped by 3 Arts Entertainment, Anonymous Content and Jakcoway Tyerman.
