Ella Purnell becomes YoungMinds Ambassador after opening up about her own struggles

Jul 6, 2018       Category: News       Comments: 0

21-year-old actress Ella Purnell has become the newest ambassador for YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.

The announcement comes after Ella opened up about her own mental health struggles with anxiety and depression in an interview with the Evening Standard earlier this year.

Ella said: “I have always felt passionate about talking openly and removing the stigma around mental health, after my own struggles as a teenager with anxiety, depression and self-harm left me feeling alone and unable to ask for help. Looking back, despite the fact almost half the class were struggling with different issues, we had no idea who or where to turn to.

I have been following the work of YoungMinds for a few years and have always admired their passion and dedication. Not only do they start conversations and raise awareness about mental health, they campaign for better inpatient care, more thorough education and resources in schools and more accessible mental health services. YoungMinds has a direct and effective impact, helping so many people and I am honoured and inspired to be joining them on this journey.”

The actress has most recently been the star of US drama Sweetbitter, available in the UK on STARZPLAY on Amazon Prime Video Channels, as well as Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence, broadcast on BBC One at Easter. Ella has also appeared in films such as Never Let Me Go, Churchill, Kick Ass 2, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Malificent.

Ella Purnell first started struggling with her mental health in school and plans to support the charity’s Wise Up campaign, which aims to rebalance the education system to ensure that there is a greater focus on children’s wellbeing.

Tom Madders, Director of Campaigns at YoungMinds said:

“We’re delighted that Ella is becoming our ambassador and joining the fight for children and young people’s mental health. Our research has found that while young people are better than ever at talking about mental health, only 9% of those who reach out for help find it easy to the support they need. That’s simply not good enough.

“We need to make sure that our services are equipped to give help to young people who need it, and that our school system values students’ wellbeing at least as much as it does exam results. YoungMinds has big plans to improve the support young people get for their mental health, and we’re excited that Ella will be helping us make them happen.”

‘Sweetbitter’ Actress Ella Purnell on Transition From Child to Adult Roles

Jun 21, 2018       Category: Photoshoots ,Press ,Sweetbitter       Comments: 0

British actress Ella Purnell landed her first-ever television role as the lead in Starz series “Sweetbitter,” based on the novel of the same name. Purnell, who appeared in her first film at age 12, says she feels like her career “snowballed” overnight.

How do you select projects?

Being in this weird transition [from] child to adult in the last two years has changed the way I view roles. I have a responsibility to young women to represent them the way they should be and to represent humans and real relationships. I will no longer take anything that is damaging to society or a specific group of people.

What’s it like auditioning for roles in America?

I do self-taping from home. … I’m conscious about the amount of time I spend away from home. I have three younger brothers, and I love them to bits. I want to have a good relationship with them and my friends. It’s hard when your life is in London but your passion is abroad.

Would you like to tackle a singing role?

I’d love stuff that incorporates singing, but I’m not on the lookout for it. I also want to do something where I have to pick up a skill, sport, or an instrument. I love learning new things, and I especially love doing [projects] based on books or true-life stories because you get more context and you get to dig in. … I love delving into [a] world. Anything where I can do loads of homework is the best.

There have been more female coming-of-age stories recently like “Sweetbitter.” What are your favorites?

I’m only drawn to things with female protagonists. “Lady Bird,” I love. “I, Tonya” blew me away. There’s not that much out there. Everything seems to be about love when it comes to coming of age, and it’s not. There’s so much of it [that involves] your mom. A girl and her mom or a girl and her dad — their relationship is special. Leaving home, … realizing that you’re an adult and you’re breaking authority, or learning how to trust yourself rather than [being] the adaptive child who does what she’s told; that’s much more of an interesting story to watch.

Ella Purnell for Flaunt Magazine

May 18, 2018       Category: Photoshoots ,Press ,Videos       Comments: 0

There’s the nondescript businessmen in button-downs discussing their clients, the hungover rockers chaining their Parliaments, socialites sipping on sugary drinks while they check their Instagram feeds on their phones. Just another Wednesday at the Chateau Marmont. My own cell buzzes, jolting me out of my reverie: Hi Tori it’s Ella. So sorry, running 5 mins late, underestimated LA traffic!! X. The actress may have the acting chops to make it in Hollywood, but she’s imported a quintessential British politeness alongside that sets her apart from the typical Chateau demo.

As promised, she arrives five minutes later, wearing a breezy button- down dress, her hair in a wispy updo. She extends her hand, complete with bubblegum pink nails, polish chipped at the corners, and apologizes again for her on-time-by-LA-standards arrival. We head inside since she only packed for sunshine: “Is February always really cold and windy, or is it just now that Trump is in town?” she says with a smile.

Since her first major role in 2010’s Never Let Me Go, Purnell has risen through the ranks by nailing a certain type—usually a precocious teenager or strong-willed heroine facing larger-than-life challenges. But as she’s matured, so have the parts that are coming her way. She’s now exploring the world of television for the first time with her most adult role to date. In Sweetbitter, Purnell is cast as Tess, a struggling New York waitress who is developing a palate for fine wining and dining and sensual trysts. Although Tess’s life may seem lavish, it is far from it—the first episodes find her living paycheck to paycheck, trying to find her calling.

Purnell says that it’s been her most natural role yet. “I do not have to act on the show,” she tells me. “I am Tess.” For someone who has flourished by playing characters in extraordinary, sometimes fantastic situations, Tess may seem like a surprising choice. However, the realistic way in which Tess’s life is depicted on the show was exactly what drew Purnell to the role: “This thing came through my email, and I think the first line said, ‘Tess’s life is in shambles.’ I was like, dude, me too!” Although the actress may seem to have a clear path ahead of her, she, like many of us, is still figuring things out as she goes. “I’m 21 and I have no idea what I’m doing or who I am. Everybody sort of looks like they have their life together on the outside, but nobody really does. Everybody has that ten-percent of them that wants to get a dog, move to Fiji, and open up a bar.”
