‘Sweetbitter’ Canceled at Starz

Dec 21, 2019       Category: News ,Sweetbitter       Comments: 0

Based on the novel by Stephanie Danler, the half-hour dramedy starred Ella Purnell and ran for two seasons.

The pre-holiday news dump has landed.

Half-hour dramedy Sweetbitter has been canceled after two seasons at Starz.

The series, which wrapped its second season in mid-August, starred Ella Purnell and was based on the novel by Stephanie Danler.

While the show was never a ratings breakout or a critical favorite, the cancellation comes as a bit of a surprise given that the series is produced by Starz corporate parent Lionsgate.

Season one averaged 164,000 live-same-day viewers and had mixed reviews among critics with a 35 percent rating among critics and 88 percent score among viewers on RottenTomatoes.com.

The premium cable network believed in the creative and upped Sweetbitter’s season two order to 10 (up from six), though the sophomore run wound up featuring only eight. Season two wrapped with a live-same-day average of 92,000 total viewers, down considerably year-over-year.

With the cancellation, Starz’s scripted roster includes Outlander, Vida, American Gods, The Spanish Princess, P-Valley, Hightown, The Girlfriend Experience, the final season of Power and its spinoff as well as new orders Dangerous Liaisons, Heels and Becoming Elizabeth, among others.

Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge and Caitlin FitzGerald starred in Sweetbitter, with Stuart Zicharman (The Americans) serving as showrunner. Brad Pitt’s Plan B exec produced the series, which landed at Starz following a multiple-network bidding war.

Showtime’s drama pilot Yellowjackets is firming up its cast, with Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci signing on for key roles.

The two will be series regulars on the project, which follows the survivors of a plane crash both in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and decades later. Ella Purnell, Sammi Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, Sophie Nélisse, Steven Krueger and Amy Okuda will also be series regulars.

The eight actors join the previously cast Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown in the pilot.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos: Mexico, The Originals), Yellowjackets tells the story of talented female high school soccer players who survive a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The potential series would chronicle their descent from a complicated but thriving team to cannibalistic, warring factions, while also following the lives they’ve attempted to reassemble 25 years later. Ella Purnell Joins Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ as Dave Bautista’s Daughter

British actress’ credits include “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and “Kick-Ass 2”

British actress Ella Purnell has joined the cast of Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” as Dave Bautista’s daughter Kate, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap exclusively. Additionally, Ana De La Reguera (“Everything, Everything,” “Goliath”), Theo Rossi (“Luke Cage,” “Sons of Anarchy”) and Huma Qureshi (“Kaala,” “Viceroy’s House,” “Gangs of Wasseypur,” “Badlapur”) round out the rest of the cast.

Snyder and Shay Hatten wrote the script for the project, which follows a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas and a man assembling a group of mercenaries to pull off the greatest heist. “Army of the Dead” marks Snyder’s return to the zombie genre, having previously made his directorial debut with “Dawn of the Dead” for Universal Pictures.

Snyder and his wife Deborah Snyder are producing for The Stone Quarry with Wesley Coller. Ori Marmur and Andrew Norman are overseeing for Netflix.

Principal photography for “Army of the Dead” is set to begin in July, with James Gunn shooting “The Suicide Squad” in September before he starts production on “Guardians 3” — so Bautista has plenty of time to wrap up Snyder’s heist film before returning to Drax.

Purnell’s credits include “Kick-Ass 2,” “The Journey Is the Destination,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and “Churchill.” She also starred in the TV mini-series “Ordeal by Innocence” and the series “Sweetbitter.”

Purnell is represented by the Curtis Brown Group, WME and Shelter PR. De la Reguera and Rossi are repped by Paradigm, Qureshi is repped by Troika.

Filming commences on Carnival’s BELGRAVIA by Julian Fellowes for ITV and EPIX

Tamsin Greig, Philip Glenister, Harriet Walter and Alice Eve to star

Filming has commenced on Belgravia, a Julian Fellowes-penned six-part limited series for ITV and EPIX from Carnival Films, the makers of Downton Abbey.

Belgravia is a story of secrets and scandals amongst the upper echelon of London society in the 19th Century. When the Trenchards accept an invitation to the now legendary ball hosted by the Duchess of Richmond on the fateful eve of the Battle of Waterloo, it sets in motion a series of events that will have consequences for decades to come as secrets unravel behind the porticoed doors of London’s grandest neighbourhood.

Filming will take place at a range of stunning Victorian locations in London and the home counties, Edinburgh, Bath and Northumberland.

The limited series reunites the award-winning creative team behind Downton Abbey; with Julian Fellowes adapting his bestselling novel for the screen and Carnival’s Gareth Neame executive producing alongside Nigel Marchant, Liz Trubridge and Fellowes. John Alexander (Sense & Sensibility, Trust Me) will direct all episodes with Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) producing.

The team is joined by a stellar ensemble cast including Tamsin Greig (Episodes), Philip Glenister (Mad Dogs), Harriet Walter (The Crown) and Alice Eve (She’s Out Of My League), Tara Fitzgerald (Game of Thrones), Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children), Richard Goulding (The Windsors), James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Adam James (Band of Brothers), Paul Ritter (Friday Night Dinner) and Saskia Reeves (Luther).

Belgravia is a Carnival Films co-production with EPIX for ITV and is distributed by NBCUniversal International Distribution. The series has been commissioned for ITV by Head of Drama, Polly Hill. The eponymous novel on which it is based is published by Orion Publishing.
